Research on music and emotions has been a key focus of the Music Psychology Lab since its inception. Much of this work was overseen by Professor Tuomas Eerola, who has now moved to the University of Jyväskylä, but these themes continue to permeate our work in various ways.
Previous projects have focused on topics including:
- Music emotion theories incorporating appraisals and contextual aspects of music (e.g., Eerola et al., 2024; Lennie & Eerola, 2022)
- Cross-cultural research on music and emotions (e.g., Athanasopoulos et al., 2021; Graves et al., 2026; Lahdelma et al., 2021)
- Musical cues that contribute to emotion perception (e.g., Micallef Grimaud & Eerola, 2022)
- Affective priming and music (e.g., Armitage et al., 2021)
- Chills induced by music (e.g., Bannister, 2018)
